North Carolina HIE and CureMD Collaborate to Improve Care Coordination

New York, NY. 8/11/2014

The North Carolina Health Information Exchange (NC HIE) has partnered with CureMD to connect CureMD’s electronic health record (EHR) platform to the NC HIE network, in order to establish HIE connectivity for local health departments across the state. Wilson County Health Department in Wilson, N.C. and Craven County Health Department in New Bern, N.C. are the first facilities to sign up under the partnership with twenty additional health departments that are eligible for NC HIE services as part of the collaboration.

“We are excited to partner with NC HIE and help the County Health Departments thrive in a mobile and Cloud world,” said Bilal Hashmat, CEO of CureMD. “By working together we will deliver new solutions that connect HIEs with the NC local health departments and help physicians improve care coordination, adoption and increase profitability.”

The goal of the partnership is to provide better care coordination between local health departments and other types of health care providers in the state. Since a large percentage of the Medicaid and uninsured patient populations are served by local health departments in North Carolina, enabling HIE connectivity for these vulnerable populations will improve the overall care they receive by providing more complete and up-to-date health information from the patient’s caregivers.

“NC HIE has strategically partnered with five EMR vendors, up from only one vendor a year ago,” said NC HIE’s Chief Operating Officer, Dave Welker. “We [NC HIE] enter into the contracts directly with the EMR vendor and negotiate costs and technical specifications on behalf of the provider in order to reduce the financial and technical responsibility of the participating organization.”

Through connection to NC HIE, local health departments will be provided with Direct secure messaging, be able to submit data to state public health systems in compliance with reporting regulations and have access to longitudinal and up-to-date patient records and chronic disease registries. The partnership seeks to reduce costs, improve patient care and enable compliance with Meaningful Use requirements.
